About 25 percent of all home accidents occur in the bathroom. Through
precautionary planning and advice from Elite Bathrooms, however, you
can greatly reduce the risk of injury.
First, select nonslip fixtures and surface materials. Anchor carpeting
and buy rugs or bath mats with nonskid backing. Large tubs, especially
those mounted in tall platforms or recessed with steps, are dangerous
for children and adults with physical problems. Choose tempered
glass, plastic, or other shatterproof materials for construction
and accessories. Avoid mounting objects such as towel bars with
sharp corners at eye level, and plan to clip or round countertop
edges.
If children live in or visit your house, plan to store medicines
and household cleansers in cabinets with safety latches or locks.
Make sure that you can access the bathroom from the outside during
an emergency.
Also be sure electrical receptacles are grounded. Outlets should
be out of reach from the shower or bathtub. Keep portable heaters
out of the bathroom. Install sufficient lighting, including a night
light.
To avoid scalding, lower the setting on your water heater, install
a temperature-limiting mixing valve, or use a pressure-balanced
valve to avoid having sudden temperature drops.
